Overview

The journey to Kazbegi follows the legendary Georgian Military Road, one of the most scenic highways in the Caucasus, offering a rich combination of history, dramatic landscapes, and mountain culture.

The route begins at the Zhinvali Reservoir, a turquoise lake created by a hydroelectric dam on the Aragvi River. Surrounded by forested hills and mountains, it is one of the most picturesque spots on the road and a popular place for short stops and photography.

Overlooking the reservoir stands the historic Ananuri Castle Complex, a former residence of the Aragvi feudal lords dating back to the 16th–17th centuries. The complex includes defensive towers, churches, and stone walls, offering insight into Georgia’s medieval military architecture as well as beautiful views over the reservoir and surrounding mountains.

Continuing north, travelers reach the confluence of the White Aragvi and Black Aragvi rivers, where two differently colored rivers flow side by side before merging. This natural contrast is one of the most iconic sights on the route and a symbol of Georgia’s diverse landscapes.

As the road climbs higher into the Greater Caucasus, visitors arrive at the Gudauri Panorama (Friendship Monument), a Soviet-era monument located at a high mountain pass. The viewpoint offers sweeping panoramic views of deep gorges and snow-capped peaks. Nearby lies Gudauri, Georgia’s main mountain resort, known for its alpine climate, wide valleys, and scenic mountain atmosphere.

The journey continues to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda), a mountain town set beneath the majestic Mount Kazbek. Above the town stands the famous Gergeti Holy Trinity Church (Sameba), built in the 14th century at an altitude of 2,170 meters. The church is one of Georgia’s most recognizable landmarks, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kazbek and the surrounding valleys.

Beyond Kazbegi, travelers may optionally continue into the dramatic Dariali Gorge, where the Dariali Monastery (Archangel Michael Church) stands surrounded by towering cliffs near the Georgian–Russian border. Along the same route, a short hike leads to the scenic Gveleti Waterfalls (optional), hidden within a narrow mountain gorge.

For those seeking deeper alpine scenery, an optional detour to Juta Village reveals wide green valleys, traditional mountain life, and stunning views of the Chaukhi Mountains, often called the “Georgian Dolomites.”
